March is National Social Work Month
In 1984, the White House officially recognized social work month.
Every March, National Social Work Month recognizes the dedication and empathy social workers across the country deliver while providing services to children and adults in need. Social workers are advocates, advisors, counselors, and facilitators and take on many different roles across all settings.
A social worker in a long-term care facility helps the person who is entering a facility make the transition from a previous living environment to life in an institutional setting while meeting the social/emotional comfort needs of that resident. Once the resident is established, the social worker assures the resident's continuing needs are met and that the person is given the opportunity to participate in planning for continued care in the facility, transfer, or discharge back into the community. The role of the social worker in a long-term care facility is to enable each individual to function at the highest possible level of social and emotional wellness. The social worker is a part of the interdisciplinary care team for each resident. Although the resident is the main focus, it should be noted that much of the social worker’s time may be spent working with the family.
Social Workers are essential.

STATE APPROVES CREATION OF REGIONAL MASS VACCINATION CLINIC AT GENESEE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Clinic is targeted to Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming County residents
WARSAW, NY – Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Department of Health have agreed to host a temporary regional mass vaccination clinic at Genesee Community College (GCC) main campus center (1 College Rd, Batavia) to provide the COVID-19 vaccine to rural counties.
“We are very pleased to be a part of this mass vaccination clinic for our rural underserved residents,” stated Rebecca Ryan, Chairwoman of the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors. “Thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to bring this important clinic together. Wyoming County, and the rural counties of Western New York, deserve and desperately need reasonable opportunities to provide vaccine access for our residents and this clinic will do that. We appreciate the state hearing our call for help and acting quickly to make this a priority.”
The clinics will be held starting:
• Friday, March 5th from 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.,
• Saturday and Sunday (March 6th and 7th) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Monday and Tuesday (March 8th and 9th) from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Appointments must be made via the New York State ‘Am-I-Eligible’ webpage am-i-eligible.covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov or by calling the New York State COVID-19 Vaccination Hotline at 1-833-697-4829 only.
The state-run clinic, expecting to vaccinate 3,500, is targeted to Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming County residents who are in the state eligible groupings. The state has confirmed, as of 03/02/21, the vaccine will be the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) one dose vaccine. The clinic is located at the GCC Athletic Center where signs will guide those with appointments to the entrance.
The announcement comes after local county leaders and public health directors of Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming Counties sent a letter last week to the Governor urgently requesting the designation of such a clinic to serve rural populations in the region. ... See MoreSee Less
