Don_Bio_0Don began his career with Arthur Andersen LLP (Andersen) where he spent 12 years progressing through senior manager.  He left Andersen in 1988 to become President, CEO, and a shareholder of Professional Medical Supply, Inc. (PMS).  PMS grew significantly and rose to number 34 on “The Rochester Top 100” list of privately held companies before being acquired in 1994 by a $500 million public company.

Don then served two years as VP/CFO of a 500 employee for-profit Certified Home Healthcare Agency (CHHA).  One of his primary responsibilities during that time was assisting the agency adapt to the changes then being experienced in the CHHA payment system from a cost plus to a capitated cost reimbursement system.

In 1998, Don returned to Andersen as Director of the Upstate New York Enterprise Consulting Group.  In 2000, he moved to The Bonadio Group where he became Partner in Charge of the ERM / Consulting Division.  He has had significant operational, financial, and turn-around consulting experience with significant portions of that experience in healthcare.

Relevant healthcare experience over recent years includes the following:

2006 – 2009: Led an engagement to review the processes, procedures and controls of all non-clinical areas of a large regional cancer research and healthcare center.  Provided ongoing consulting support for specific strategic issues subsequent to project completion.

January 2009 – January 2011: Interim CFO of a $55 million Hospital Group that had experienced the departure of their CEO and CFO and a loss of $6.5 million in 2008.  The entity comprised two hospitals, a 120-bed nursing home, 180 long-term home health patients, inpatient mental health, chemical dependency, IRRS unit, physician offices, and outpatient chemical dependency and medical clinics.  Responsible for complete review of all operations and recommendations to the Board and CEO.  Responsible for approval of all contracts and agreements, and review of legal issues prior to the presentation to the Board.  Initiated and managed major cost reduction and revenue enhancement initiatives.  Worked directly with DOH (including obtaining emergency loan funds), vendors, Board, attorneys, and physicians on all matters related to the Hospital.  Duration of engagement was extended due to a natural disaster causing catastrophic damage to one facility.  Improved current assets / liabilities from an excess of $4.1 million current liabilities to an excess of $0.4 million current assets through improved operations, grants, and vendor concessions/discounts. Negotiated over $1.5 million of vendor concessions as part of financial restructuring. Managed and negotiated $16 million insurance settlement related to the flood.

January 2011 – December 2011: Hired by the Board to work in conjunction with the newly appointed interim-CEO performing/supporting many of the roles of the CEO at a health system comprised of a 60 bed hospital, 160 bed nursing home and inpatient behavioral health unit. Working with management, the Board, and interim-CEO, over a twelve month period performed an intense overall operational and financial review and assessment. Made and implemented recommendations for operational improvements as well as staffing and service provision adjustments.

December 2011 – June 2012: Interim CFO of a $70 million healthcare system with two acute hospitals (120 bed total), 175 bed nursing home and various off-site services and clinics. Provided support in all financial areas and various strategic initiatives after departure of CFO. Assisted in the recruiting and selection of a permanent CFO.

March 2012 – Current: CEO of Wyoming County Community Hospital – Oversee all functions of this County owned health facility comprised of acute care, nursing home, inpatient behavioral health unit and outpatient clinics.

Don has also performed turn-around engagements for clients in many other industries and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Upstate New York Turnaround Management Association.

Don received his Bachelor of Business Administration from St. Bonaventure University.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
